Kenya Mombasa Port is an important deep-water port in East Africa, and its port range attracts several countries around Kenya to the hinterland of Central Africa. Before 2017, the main transport route from Mombasa port in Kenya to central Africa was a two-lane highway, which was known locally as the "road of death" because it not only crossed plains, plateaus, mountains and other complex landforms, but was congestion-prone.
In September 2014, the Mombasa-Nairobi Railway was officially started. The railway starts from the port city Mombasa in the east and ends in the capital Nairobi in the west. The construction started on December 12, 2014 and was put into operation on May 31, 2017. It will connect key Kenyan cities such as Nakuru, Kisumu and Kakamega until the Ugandan border.
